Due to many reasons, I will be taking a hiatus from blogging until the fall. I will be back in September ready and raring to go. But right now between the wedding, work, and my need for a new computer (mine is currently very dead); I will be taking a break.

Fit Friday: Go-to Snacks

Well, my computer is working… kinda… kinda not. I have a new battery and charger, but it still shuts down on me randomly. Frustrating, but currently it’s on, so I’m going with it.

I wanted to share with you my top 5 go-to snack foods. These are items I always have ready to go in my house for all those times when I just need something… like RIGHT NOW.

So here ya go, my 5 foods you should have in your kitchen always.

1) Hard-boiled eggs

Eggs are fabulous. Eggs fill you up. They are high in protein to keep you full for a while but they can also be a pain to cook if you should have been out the door 5 minutes ago. I usually get 2 dozen eggs when I go grocery shopping; 1 to cook with and 1 for hard-boiling. That way I have all set a super easy breakfast, or snack, or lunch. Have a few minutes? Chop them up, mix in an avocado, add some lemon juice, salt and pepper and you have a delicious egg salad. Or try on top of a salad. Either way, hard-boiled eggs are indispensable in my house.

2) Trail-mix

Trail mix is one of those foods I’ve always adored, since I was a kid…. then again, when I was a kid I usually just ate all the  M&M’s, but still, I love it. And it’s super easy and extremely versatile. Plus, it’s almost always paleo. I like to keep a large container all ready to go in my pantry. As it starts to empty, I can add new ingredients so it’s ever changing. I start with nuts of any type (just not peanuts), add dried fruit (no added sugar), unsweetened coconut, dark chocolate chips; the possibilities are endless. Toss a handful in a ziploc and put in your purse for anytime that you feel your blood sugar dropping; or munch on some after a tough workout- your body will thank you for it.

3) Veggies veggies and more veggies

I like to keep a good sized gladware container full of ready to go chopped up veggies in my fridge at all times. It makes everything from snack time to dinner prep easier. I try to keep the veggies organic and seasonal, but usually there are carrots, celery, sugar snap peas, mushrooms, etc. It’s easy to grab a handful with some dressing to add to my lunch. A little dicing and they are set for my morning omelette, or a quick saute and they can be added to dinner. I prep a bunch on the weekend so I’m all ready to go throughout the week.

4) Plain cooked chicken

Chicken is one of those foods that can be used for just about any meal at any time of day. It makes the week run a whole lot smoother if I have several chicken breasts precooked from the weekend ready for whatever and whenever. I can shred it, add some salsa, and wrap it in a lettuce cup for lunch. I can add it on top of a salad. I can toss it in a stir fry. Really, it can go just about anywhere. And since Paleo doesn’t bode well with “fast food” or those frozen meals from the grocery store; it’s nice to have something that can be just as quick.

5) Fruit

Uh… I don’t think this one needs much explanation, but don’t think it’s not just as important. I can’t tell you how many times I’m about to run out the door when my stomach growls and I stare at the kitchen looking for inspiration. My savior? A peach, or banana, or apple, or pear…. Anything that’s easy to grab and go, I’m all for. For fruits that aren’t so easy, just make sure to have some prepped before hand. When it’s berry season, I like to have a huge bowl of strawberries, tops cut off, to add to smoothies, top a salad, for on the road, etc. Same with pineapple, oranges, or any other fruit that needs some preparation.

If you’ve noticed, each snack tends to take a bit of preparation. But I’m always so thankful that I’ve put in the time to have these healthy snacks ready when I need something quick. Just find a day when you have 30-60 minutes, and get your kitchen all set for the rest of the week. You’ll be just as glad as I am when you end up reaching for a cup of strawberries and a hardboiled egg instead of some nasty chemical concoction.

By the way, most of you know that I’ve been Paleo for a few months now and that I’m working to lose weight for my wedding… well I’ve hit a bit of a plateau (lost 13lbs so far!) and I decided that the biggest push I’m going to get is from sharing even more, so…. now on Fridays I will not only be sharing tips and tricks that I’ve discovered, but … I will also share my weight…………..

OH MY GOSH!… what have I done…. lol.

and maybe a picture… that one still really scares.

So … here goes.

I started at 170lbs. I am now at 157. My goal is between 130-140.

Phew, ok. Not so bad. 😛

Belated Small Change Saturday: Cuddle Bug

It’s funny… it just hit me. Today is 6 months till the wedding. Oh boy!

And I’m so excited and so nervous and sooo looking at the to-do list. 🙂

But really, I can’t wait. I can’t wait to make this amazing man my husband and be with him for the rest of my life. I can’t wait to have children with him. I can’t wait to be old and wrinkly sitting next to him in rocking chairs reminiscing about our life together. I just plain can’t wait.

 

So on that wonderful note, the small change that I will be focusing on this week is the power of touch… cuddling to be exact.

Having studied child development in school, I knew that touch was important for infants to bond with their parents, but until now I never realized how important it was for adults, and couples specifically.

 

Touch is amazing. Touch is what we need, what we crave, what gives us a renewed sense of humanity every single day. Touch is not an option. And when it comes to a relationship, touch is vital. (Make sure to check out the links shared here, they have some amazing information.)

But I also know that in our day to day lives, touch is not always our number one priority. We don’t always work on making sure we connect with someone through touch. And we don’t always take the time to make sure we connect with our loved ones daily that way. It’s something that gets dropped, lost, crushed, forgotten, and abused. It’s time to take this essential back.

One amazing type of touch is cuddling. Cuddling is one of the most intimate types of touch, without entering into the realm of sexuality. Cuddling is putting your body right up against another’s feeling their breath, their heart beat, while at the same time they can feel yours. It’s a way to communicate your love and connection to someone without saying a single word.

My focus will be on making sure to connect through touch with the man that I will spending my life with. Your goal may include a different, but no less important, relationship that you would like to foster through touch. The focus here is to be aware of how necessary touch is and use it as a way to foster and nurture relationships of all kinds.

Toddler Tuesday: Letter of the Week Update

Good afternoon fabulous people!

I wanted to update you all on Baby Miss’ progress for our “Letter of the Week”. We have been at it for a month now, and we are currently on the letter D.

As most of you know from a previous post, I have been working on not only teaching Baby Miss a letter each week, but we also have a color, number, and shape of the week. It’s been going beautifully. I try to do some sort of letter activity each day, and as many number, color, and shape activities as I can (since those cycle through more then the letters on our educational calendar).

She has been having a blast decorating our new letter and number each week. A had apple prints on it. B had beans. C had leftover foam “candy” stickers from Halloween, and D has dog stickers all over it. Each number has a certain type of something on it. For example, the number 2 has 2 cookie monster stickers on it, 4 has 4 star stickers on it, and so forth.

What do you get when you mix paint with cars? Car tracks!

We have also been doing lots of stamping, collaging, printing, and painting. I try to change it up each day. We also do some color mixing when learning about a secondary color (ie. blue + yellow = green). I am basically trying to “surround” her with the new material and talk about it as much as possible (point out a RED stop sign or a SQUARE box) to help her absorb it.

touch numbers, number matching

One of my favorite activities that I have come up with is a number matching and a letter matching game. Obviously we couldn’t do it the first week with only one letter, but I like it because it helps to review the old letters and numbers each week while helping her practice the new one. My matching game isn’t fancy, just index cards that I wrote the alphabet on (4x). I could have done the number cards the same way, but I found these printable “touch” numbers that I just attached to cardstock. (I can’t for the life of me find the specific touch numbers that I printed out, but here are ones just like it.) Baby Miss is LOVING it. She’s getting pretty good at it too. We play it two different ways; one where she chooses a card and then finds the match, the other where I choose the card and she finds the match. Both work equally well.

The family also already owned a alphabet/number puzzle that we have been using each week. I only bring out the letters and numbers that she has learned. The puzzle seems pretty old (hand-me down?), but here is one similar.

As for Little Miss, she and I have been hard at work on her sight words. She does get some “homework” from school, so we work on that each day, but I try to add an activity of our own to the mix too. Today we did sight word dominoes. It was a huge success. It got her reading and working with a ton of the words she has learned so far. And she was super proud of the end result (she made me take a picture of it to send to her Mom and Dad). 🙂 I was super proud of her too. She worked really hard, but had fun while doing it.

I made the dominoes set with index cards as well. Two words per card and I made sure to repeat the words on several cards so the game goes smoothly. I even threw some family names in there (Mom, Dad, her name, her sister’s name, and my own) which she got extremely excited about when she noticed them.

You could also make a memory game (just like I did with Baby Miss’ letter set) using sight words.

Phew, that made me tired just thinking about everything we have done in the past few weeks. 🙂

Saturday Small Change: Walk This Way!

Good day!

How is your weekend going so far? Mine has had a bit of a slow start… thus the late post. Ah well, who says you can’t be lazy on a Saturday. 🙂

Today I want to discuss our newest small change.

I want you to walk… 30 minutes… everyday. And I mean everyday. Phew! That wasn’t so hard now was it? 🙂

Walking is a fabulous form of exercise, stress reliever,  and a way to get you outdoors (see small change #2).

One of the reasons I love walking is because almost anyone can do it, anywhere, anytime, it doesn’t make you sweat so you don’t have to shower afterwards, and it can provide some amazing benefits.

 

Need some motivation? Grab your pooch! It’s great for them too.

Don’t have a dog? One of my favorite ways to walk, is by listening to an audio book. Find a book you’ve really been wanting to read, grab it on audio, and get walking. You’ll find that the 30 minutes goes really quickly. You may even walk more, just to get through a chapter… or two. 🙂

Not a bigger reader? (we’ll work on that later) Grab a friend. Walk on your lunch hour. Start a new habit with your family by walking after dinner instead of watching TV. It doesn’t matter how you do it, just do it!

Still not convinced? By walking at 3 mph (or a 20 minute mile), you can burn from 100-300 calories per 1/2 hour depending on your weight. If you change nothing in your lifestyle from today on except for walking 30 minutes daily, you can burn 10-15 lbs by the end of this year. Now that’s motivation!

Small Change Saturday: Green your Clean

Hello Fabulous People! How is everyone?

It’s time for our 3rd installment of Small Change Saturday. Have you been flossing? Have you spent time outdoors? How are you feeling? I would love to know how things are going.

Ready for your next challenge?

This week I want you to Green Your Clean. I am going to share with you some simple recipes and products that will give your home that clean feeling without loading it up with a bunch of yucky toxic chemicals. Plus, it’s safer for you, your kids, your pets, and the Earth.

Now remember, I’m on the same journey you are. I have recently purged my home of my regular go-to cleaners and replaced them with easy to make, easy to use, natural homemade cleaners. I have tested them, and they work. Plus, I want to make your cleaning routine easier, simpler. It’s hard to make a new change stick if there are barriers in the way. I want to give you the tools to succeed. So here goes…

Ingredients:

white vinegar

baking soda

hydrogen peroxide

That’s it- just 3 ingredients to clean your whole house.

I recommend picking your ingredients up in bulk… they’re cheaper that way, and you will find yourself using them for everything!

 

Recipes:

All purpose cleaner- (and I mean all purpose- floors, windows, counters, etc.)

1 part vinegar + 1 part water

For really strong cleaning- you can use vinegar undiluted. Don’t worry, the smell will dissipate relatively quickly. 🙂

Got something super yucky? Say really gross soap scum in your bathtub? First use scrubber, then spray with all purpose, then scrub again.

If you have an item that you need to make sure is completely disinfected (ie cutting board with chicken juice); wash with soap and water, dry, spray vinegar solution and hydrogen peroxide (keep in separate spray bottles), scrub, let dry. The mixture of vinegar and hydrogen peroxide has been shown to be better than chlorinated bleach.

 

Deodorizer- 

baking soda…uh that’s it

Sprinkle in trash cans, on carpets before vacuuming, in your gym shoes, and anywhere else that gets gross. Wait 15-30 min, depending on stench, and shake or vacuum up. Tada! No smell.

 

If you want to get super fancy… or feel the need for extra credit (silly over achiever you!), you can add essential oils to your vinegar mixture or baking soda. Here are some ideas.

I’m currently working on creating my own “signature” blend for cleaning and body products. I’ll let you know what I come up with.

So what should you use with your new cleaning products?

There are only a few items that you need to really clean your whole home.

1. A good handheld scrubber

2. A small scrubber (or an old toothbrush works well too)

3. Microfiber cloths and/or old t-shirts cut up into rags

          You can gather the items above, along with your two spray bottles, and         your box of baking soda in a handy carryall like this one.

4. Extendable duster for ceiling fans and cobwebs

5. A floor “mop”– use something like a swiffer that you can attach the microfiber cloths to. You can even use the “wetjet” and just add your vinegar solution to it.

Extra Credit- a steam cleaner. These things are fabulous for floors, curtains, anything. They sanitize with no chemicals. yay!

This is what I’ve discovered…

Winter is for contemplation and rest

 In winter, your focus should be on yourself. This is the end of a year and the beginning of a new one. Now is the perfect time to do a self inventory. Find out where you are, where you want to go, and how you want to get there. Love on yourself. Get some much deserved rest and prepare yourself for the year ahead.

 Spring is for new beginnings and creation

 In spring, your focus should be on new challenges. This is the time when your creative juices are their strongest. Take your cue from nature and create something. Take risks, be bold, and go way outside you’re comfort zone. Take all that energy that you stored up in winter and send it out into the world. This is the time of change and new beginnings.

 Summer is for adventure and leisure

 In summer, your focus should be on keeping the momentum going that you started in the spring. Now is the time to “up the ante” so to speak. Nature is exploding with life and energy and you should be too. But summer is also a time to spend time enjoying life. Find something that you love doing and spending time with it everyday. Even better, take your hobby (whatever it is) outdoors. Soak up the sun, breathe the fresh air, and enjoy yourself.

 Autumn is for family and harvest

 In autumn, your focus should be on reaping the bounty that you have sown. Complete the task that you have been working towards all year. Harvest all that you have sown. This is also a time to focus on family. Bring all the energy that has been out in the world working to attain your goal back towards home base. Nothing can be achieved without a strong base. Soak up love, joy, peace and share it with those closest to you.

There is a reason God did not make everyday sunny and 70. There is a need in life for ups and downs, times for creation and times for contemplation. Life is meant to have rain and sunshine. Life is meant to be lived by the seasons.

Home Sick

Well… the season has finally caught up with me. I’m sick.

 

I wanted to use this opportunity to share with you some of my favorite ways to beat the “I’m Home Sick” blues.

 

An Epsom Salt Bath: I love epsom salt baths… heck just baths in general.

Make it super relaxing by making your own fancy bath salts and save them for days when you’re sick, stressed, or feeling just plain blah.

Fill your container (a mason jar or equivalent) with Epsom salts. Add several drops of your favorite essential oil (may I recommend lavender, chamomile, or peppermint?). If you’re feeling super adventurist add some dried herbs or flowers. Let container sit for about a week to infuse salts with all that fabulous goodness.

Then, the next time you’re home sick, light some candles, let the bathroom get super steamy, and throw a good amount of your homemade bath salts into the tub. All those aches will melt away and you’ll feel like a new person after a good soak.

 

Homemade heating pad: This one I’m going to have to thank my mom for.

Years ago, my mom made a whole collection of these homemade heating pads and now I have no idea what I would do without it. They’re super easy to make. Cut fabric to your desired size (mine is a rectangle sized 12″x6″). Put inside out, and sew three sides. Fill with FEED CORN. You can find feed corn at all sorts of places online, at farm supply stores, I even found some at Walmart one time. Sew the final side and you’re done. If you so desire, you can also create a pillow case for you’re heating pad (that way you can wash the case when necessary).

To use the heating pad, you can place it in you’re microwave (start with 2 min) or in the freezer for several hours. The feed corn hold the heat or cold for quite a long time. It’s fabulous for menstrual cramps, cold feet during the winter, tension headaches, and yes, when you’re sick. In fact, I’m using mine write now. Love it!

Tea is amazing for all sorts of ailments, but I’m always reminded of how much I love tea when I’m sick. There is just something about holding this steaming cup of goodness, the heat running down my throat ridding my body of all yuckiness. “That’s right body! You better be scared- tea’s coming!!” …can you tell I love my tea? :-p

Adding honey and lemon gives my tea a special kung-pow that really helps to knock out a cold or flu. Honey is antibacterial among other things, and lemon will give you a dose of vitamin C. “See I told you body, you can run but you can’t hide!!”.

 

Daytime TV: So… I have to admit something.

I like daytime tv. You know, all those morning shows, the infomercials, the shopping network, reality tv… oh boy. I really shouldn’t have admitted that. But I have to say, when I’m sick, there is nothing better than lounging on the couch, cudding with Rocky- the super dog!, and watching The View, Ellen, and HSN. In fact, that’s what I’m going to do right now.

My Homemade Skincare Regimen

I have a love/hate relationship with all-natural homemade products. Half of me wants to do what’s right for the planet and my body, the other really just wants to run over to target and get a huge a** bottle of something chemically laden cause it’s easy and everyone else is doing it. But then I’m all, “self, that’s selfish (haha pun!) you should want to do what’s best for the earth. And you don’t want to give your money to some huge conglomerate that’s just going to squander your money and make profits off worker’s from other countries”. “But self, it’s so much easier!!”… You see, it’s complicated.

But deep down, I really want to go “all-natural” and I really don’t want to have to depend on someone else to do the research on what’s best for my body and the planet. So, here we are. 🙂

And I wanted to share with you my latest “switch” to homemade products…

My skincare routine.

Now, I have extremely sensitive, reactive, acne-prone skin. After basically attacking it all throughout highschool (and reaping the uh, benefits), I have learned to be extremely gentle on my skin.

That said, I also need the stuff to work. My skin breaks out like nobody’s business, so I need solutions to fight the oil and bacteria, yet be gentle enough so that my skin doesn’t react to harsh treatments. Most of these products are great for all types of skin, but I will give you a few options if you are on the drier side of the skin spectrum.

There are 3 ways I take care of my skin. Cleanse, Treat, and Moisturize. Now you may be thinking, but Amy, if you have oily skin, why the heck would you want to moisturize? In fact, I thought that too. Up until recently I ran away from anything that might add moisture to my skin. But, what I found out was that the more you take away, the more your body is going to ramp up it’s oil production. So if you moisturize well, your body will slow down it’s oil production. Get it? Plus, moisturizing will keep the wrinkles at bay so… 🙂

Without further ado, my routine.

Morning

Cleanse: Honey Cinnamon “Scrub”

Mix 1 cup RAW honey with enough cinnamon till it makes a light paste… emphasis on light- cinnamon is strong!

This amazing scrub is enough to get any dry skin off from overnight while still being absolutely luscious. And it smells heavenly. I try to do it first thing in the shower and leave it on till the end to rinse. On the weekends, I’ll take a bath and leave it on for a good 20-30 minutes while I soak.

If you have extra dry skin: DO NOT ADD THE CINNAMON. It can be somewhat drying and irritate any super dry patches you may have. The honey is extremely moisturizing though, so just use it plain. Or add sugar to the honey for a light scrub. Remember, not too much. You want more honey than scrubber. We don’t want to tear at your skin.

Treat: Apple Cider Vinegar Toner

Mix 1 part ACV to 2 parts water (filtered or distilled is best)

That’s it. Put it in a squeezy bottle (you know the ones you can get for traveling) and just put a bit on a cotton ball on swipe on your face.

This is great for all skin types. Apple Cider Vinegar is amazing because it works to balance your skin’s ph levels so it’s not too oily or dry.

Moisturize: Aloe Vera

Straight up aloe vera  on a cotton ball. That’s it.

Make sure though to get 100% aloe vera. Which can be easier said than done. Personally I like Aubrey Organics, but just make sure to read the ingredients. Also, it’s a great sign if the packaging tells you to refrigerate after opening (bonus for a cooling effect and tighter pores!) meaning that it’s not full of preservatives.

Cleanse: Baking Soda Paste

I keep a plastic container of baking soda in the bathroom. I just pore some out into my palm, add a bit of water and wash with my face like normal.

Baking soda is another way I exfoliate my skin. If you have dry skin, I recommend NOT using baking soda, at least not every day. Maybe once per week? Also, the more water you add, the less abrasive the baking soda, so feel free to add quite a bit, till it’s really not a paste anymore. Or, you can add some to honey (as done in a.m.).

Treat: Tea Tree Oil

Tea Tree oil is amazing for acne, plus about a million other ailments. Make sure to purchase 100% pure tea tree oil, which then can be diluted due to your sensitivity. There are two options for dilution- oil or water. If you dilute in water make sure to use distilled. The concentration you use is up to you, but I would recommend starting out with about 5 drops per 1/2 cup, and go from there. I don’t recommend putting pure tea tree oil on your face- it will be much too strong and can burn. Once diluted, put in a sprayer bottle and you can spray onto a cotton ball or directly onto your face. If you use a carrier oil (more information below), you can use the same ratio as above; but put in a squeeze bottle instead.

If you have very dry skin- do not use tea tree oil. There are many essential oils that you can use instead, including but not limited to chamomile, lavender, rose, and sandalwood.

Moisturize: Olive Oil

Olive oil is amazing for all skin types. It’s properties are very similar to the oil (sebum) that our bodies produce already, plus it’s full of vitamin E and A which help keep your skin fabulous. Make sure to use organic olive oil to keep away from any yucky chemicals.

Olive oil can used plain, but I use mine mixed with tea tree oil. I use olive oil as my carrier oil. Make sure to mix this combination before use. I squirt some out on a cotton ball and go to town. Do not wipe off afterwards though. Your skin will drink the olive oil in, and you will love the results in the morning.

That’s it. That’s what I use on my face. It may seem a bit complicated at first, but it become habit very quickly. I would recommend buying small amounts of the ingredients first so that if you decide you don’t like something, you’re not out a huge chunk from your wallet.
